Economic feasibility of stationary electrochemical storages for electric bill management applications: The Italian scenario

2016

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are expected to become a fundamental element of the electricity infrastructure, thanks to their ability to decouple generation and demand over time. BESSs can also be used to store electricity during low-price hours, when the demand is low, and to meet the demand during peak hours, thus leading to savings for the consumer. This work focuses on the economic viability of BESS from the point of view of the electricity customer. The analysis refers to a lithium-ion (Li-ion), an advanced lead-acid, a zinc-based, a sodium-sulphur (NaS) and a flow battery. The total investment and replacement costs are estimated in order to calculate the cumulated cash flow, …

Techno-economic evaluation of PV based institutional smart micro-grid under energy pricing dynamics

2020

Abstract The solar photovoltaic (PV) system with battery energy storage have a lot of potential to provide reliable and cost-effective electricity and to contribute in micro-grid operation. However, the operational performance of such type of micro-grid system depends on many factors (e.g. techno-economic sizing, energy management among the sources, market energy prices dynamics, energy dispatch strategies, etc.). In this paper, a typical Indian institutional energy system has considered for techno-economic performance evaluation for operating as a smart micro-grid under market energy pricing dynamics. The institutional energy system has integrated PV, battery storage and DG for operating a…

Battery capacity estimation for building-integrated photovoltaic system: Design study of a Southern Norway ZEB house

2017

Building-integrated Photovoltaic system (BIPV) with energy storage (ES) can help in reducing the peak demand as well as overcoming the intermittency of the load and PV production. In Southern Norway, a Smart Village Skarpnes is developed for zero energy buildings (ZEBs). In this Smart Village, five houses are built with BIPV system. Its important to estimate the appropriate battery sizing with consideration of local PV production and load profile taking into account the battery characteristics with minimization of the annual electricity bill. In this study, real operational results of house (C6) from the Skarpnes Smart Village is used for estimating the capacity of battery energy storage fo…

Battery Capacity Estimation for Building Integrated Photovoltaic System: Design Study for Different Geographical Location(s)

2017

Abstract Building Integrated Photovoltaic system (BIPV) with energy storage (ES) can help in reducing the peak demand, improving the power quality and control dispatching of the power. Adding a proper size of battery ES to the grid-connected PV system could reduce the overall investment cost as well as reducing the grid-dependency. A typical battery energy storage capacity is going to be determined by considering the real-time operational (PV production as well as load consumption) data. In this study, real-time operational data of a residential load (C6 house) with BIPV system located Southern Norway as well as institutional load (Teri university) with BIPV located in New Delhi, India are …

Autonomous Demand Side Management of Electric Vehicles in a Distribution Grid

2019

The electricity demand due to the increasing number of EVs presents new challenges for the operation of the electricity network, especially for the distribution grids. The existing grid infrastructure may not be sufficient to meet the new demands imposed by the integration of EVs. Thus, EV charging may possibly lead to reliability and stability issues, especially during the peak demand periods. Demand side management (DSM) is a potential and promising approach for mitigation of the resulting impacts. In this work, we developed an autonomous DSM strategy for optimal charging of EVs to minimize the charging cost and we conducted a simulation study to evaluate the impacts to the grid operation…

Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 2: Economic feasibility and sensitivity analysis

2016

This paper is the second of a two-part series, aiming to evaluate the economic feasibility of electrochemical storage systems in peak load shaving applications. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is considered to be added to a private facility, with the aim of reducing the customer electricity bill. The BESS is charged during the night, when the electricity prices are the lowest and discharged during the daily hours, when the prices are the highest, contemporary achieving a leveling of the daily usage pattern. The economical evaluations are carried out considering four different electrochemical technologies: lithium-ion (li-ion), advanced lead-acid, sodium-sulphur (NaS) and flow batte…

Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 1: Operating strategy and modification of the power diagram

2016

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are gaining more and more attention in the current global energy landscape, thanks to some peculiar characteristics such as the versatility, modularity, scalability, fast response time, etc. BESSs can advantageously be used in the ancillary services market, in order to provide all the services necessary to ensure the stability and the reliability of the power system. Among other applications, BESS can also be used to shift electricity demand from on-peak to off-peak periods, also contributing to relieve peak demand charges, thus ensuring a saving for the customers. The BESS is charged when the electricity prices are the lowest (during the night) and di…

Transition of a Distribution System towards an Active Network. Part I: Preliminary Design and Scenario Perspectives

2011

In an European perspective, the focus of Smart Grids initiatives (SET Plan - Strategic Energy Technology Plan) is strictly linked with the main commitment to achieve the goals of the Climate and Energy Package 20-20-20, at the light of the three main pillars of the European energy policy: competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply. Smart grid technologies will enable load levelling of the electrical grid, allowing a power company to run cleaner power sources - such as hydroelectric, wind, or solar - while reducing the need to use carbon-emitting gas, coal, or oil plants to meet peak demand. In this framework the proposed paper refers about the technical economical feasibility st…

Smart load prediction analysis for distributed power network of Holiday Cabins in Norwegian rural area

2020

Abstract The Norwegian rural distributed power network is mainly designed for Holiday Cabins with limited electrical loading capacity. Load prediction analysis, within such type of network, is necessary for effective operation and to manage the increasing demand of new appliances (e. g. electric vehicles and heat pumps). In this paper, load prediction of a distributed power network (i.e. a typical Norwegian rural area power network of 125 cottages with 478 kW peak demand) is carried out using regression analysis techniques for establishing autocorrelations and correlations among weather parameters and occurrence time in the period of 2014–2018. In this study, the regression analysis for loa…

Adaptive plasticity of blue tits(Parus caeruleus)and great tits(Parus major)breeding in natural and semi‐natural insular habitats

2004

The breeding performance and foraging of blue and great tits, and the abundance of arthropods living on the trees of an oak-wood and of a coniferous reafforestation were studied in Sicily, in order to: 1) compare breeding parameters in natural and semi-natural habitats within the same area; 2) estimate the degree of overlap in peak resource and peak demand of young tits, and the overlap of nestling diet of the two species in the two habitats. Both species had earlier laying dates, laid more eggs and raised more fledglings in the oakwood than in the reafforestation; they achieved the same fledging success within the same habitat type. These differences are probably due to the earlier and hig…
